Anal Gland Problem
What is anal gland?: They are the unique scent producing glands located on either side of anus of a dog.
What is its function?: These glands are important in the social behavior of dog.They help the dog to communicate among them and as a way to mark their territory.These glands secrete a foul-smelling liquid which travels through small tubules to openings on either side of the anus.
Common problem:Sometimes anal glands fail to empty properly and result in impaction.
Clinical signs: Dragging their rear ends along the ground or licking/biting at their rear end. Some dogs will also present with loose stools.
Treatment: manually expressing anal glands to remove all of the secretion that has built up inside them.
Complications:Infections and abscesses of anal gland.But can be treated with antibiotics.
Prevention:Some dogs have chronic or recurring anal gland impaction.In this case it is better to provide good quality food with high fiber content.
Treatment for very complicated cases: Surgical removal of anal glands.
Recommendation:If you see any signs of anal gland problem with your dog ; visit your veterinarian to avoid further complications.
