Selection of a new puppy



Little things to keep in mind before selecting a puppy in your home.   
         
1.Breed -Select a breed that is more suitable for your home.
  • small breeds:-Toy dog breeds are good companion for a house that not having young children.
  • Hounds:They need more exercise.So give regular exercise for your puppy/dog by providing dog toys to play with or take them outside to get proper exercise.
  • Sporting breeds:They are easy to train but need exercise.
  • Border collie:This breed need more attention because they are with very active mind; so keep them occupied.   
  •  Terriers:They are good with children if properly trained. 
2.cost:You need to have an approximate cost evaluation before purchasing a puppy.Think about the cost you can afford in a long run.Cost includes initial examination by a veterinarian,vaccinations,cost of veterinary treatment through out their life if they need to treat for some disease conditions.
  • Pet insurance:This is actually a good thing to do after you got your new puppy because this will help you to cover most of your treatment cost depending upon which type of insurance policy you are taking.Some of the insurance companies will provide you an insurance policy for free for a period of time.After that period if you want to continue with them you can have the choice to do that.Anyway it is better to have an insurance policy for your pet.
  • Feeding cost:This is another major thing you need to consider.Get a rough estimate about the feeding cost per month you can afford before selecting a puppy.Smaller breeds are less expensive in long run with respect to their feeding cost.Find out the cost effective and healthy dog food that are suitable for your breed by comparing the prices with different feed companies.
3.Pedigree: Consider this option whether you want a pure breed or cross bred puppy.Pure breeds are comparatively more expensive than cross breds.
4.Sex:This factor need to consider to determine the temperament of the dog you want...whether it is a male or female.
  • Male:Usually males are little harder to train;but more responsive once trained.
  • Females:They are better family mates because of less aggressiveness.
5.Buying a Puppy:This is the most important task.You have the choice of buying a puppy from a pet store or directly from a breeder.To find out a good breeder is another great job in the process of selection of a puppy.Search for different breeders and get their price list and their reputation in the field.Then compare the available data with different breeders and decide which breed and where you want get your new puppy.

  • Registration documents if it is a pure breed
How to select a good puppy? Now you are in the actual process of selecting a puppy.A healthy puppy will have the following signs:  
 Nose:Mucus membrane clean and without any nasal discharge
Gum:Bright pink 
Teeth:Clean and straight
Eyes:Bright,clear,look straight ahead and without any discharge
Ear canal:Clean and without any foul smell,wax or dirt and head shaking.
Stomach:Without swelling and bulge at navel or groin area. 
Heart beat:Should be regular.
Genitals:Clean without any irritation,both testicles should present for a male puppy. 
Coat:Clean,fluffy without any mats,sores,itching,deposits on fur.
Legs:Straight and well formed.
Bottom:Should have a clean bottom without any signs of diarrhea.
